Retirement has taken on new meanings. The term now denotes more than an event. It's an extended part of the life course that may entail second and third careers, new forms of volunteer involvement, new relationships and the renewal of dormant ones, overdue self-reflection and the realization of postponed hopes and expectations.
As both a Ph.D-trained philosopher and teacher, and a hands-on, in the trenches, lifelong learning leader and life transition facilitator, I have some ideas and concept to recommend. Also, I'm having to practice what I preach as my recent retirement from the position of founding director of the NC Center for Creative Retirement (University of North Carolina Asheville) challenges me to make the journey myself.
